The prostate is really a gland that is part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its main function is to first produce and then store a see-through fluid that is an important part of semen. A sound individual's prostate is somewhat bigger than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can jam up the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in very severe situations completely impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In older-aged males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating is difficult. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with medication or with surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers that strikes older males and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Raised test results may indicate a disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has only recently been found that drugs such as Docetaxel could be useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
