The prostate is a gland that is a component of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's paramount function is to secrete and then store a clear fluid that is part of seminal fluid. A non-diseased man's prostate is a bit larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can stop urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe cases wholly impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In older-aged men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with even surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers affecting older-aged men and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also also a lab blood test that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Elevated test results might suggest disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has just recently been found that drugs such as Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for health-related or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
