The prostate gland is an important part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its leading role is to secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a component of seminal fluid (semen). A sound human's prostate is a little bit greater in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can stop up the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe cases completely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or surgical measures.

In older males, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medication or with surgical measures that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect elderly men and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There can be also a blood test that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised blood PSA results can suggest disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has recently been noticed that medicines like Docetaxel are helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
