The prostate gland is part of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's overriding job is to first produce and then store a clear fluid that is a vital part of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy man's prostate gland is slightly larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can hinder the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in severe situations entirely impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or even operations.

In older-aged males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with medicines or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes older males and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is normally very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could highly suggest disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been found that drugs like Docetaxel may be useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical value or just for sexual purposes.
