The prostate is a component of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's predominant job is to produce and store a clear liquid that is part of semen, or seminal fluid. A non-diseased individual's prostate gland is somewhat larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can stop the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in very extreme instances wholly impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or operations.

In older men, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of medications or with surgical measures that removes part of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that affects older males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally very low. Raised test results may signal disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been noticed that medicines like Docetaxel could be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly sexual purposes.
