The prostate is really a gland that is part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. Its most primary function is to secrete and store a transparent liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid (semen). A normal human's prostate is slightly larger than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can obstruct the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme instances completely impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or surgical measures.

In older males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is commonly known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with even surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which can be normally quite low. Raised blood PSA results can be an indicator of disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has just recently been discovered that medications including Docetaxel may be useful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or for strictly sexual purposes.
