The prostate is an important part of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's leading job is to first produce and then store a clear fluid that is part of seminal fluid. A healthy man's prostate gland is a bit bigger than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during a rectal examination.
Inflammation in the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can stop up urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in very severe cases wholly impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.
In older males, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).
Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers that affects elderly males and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Raised pSA blood results may highly suggest disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has recently been discovered that medicines such as Docetaxel could be helpful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.
Stimulation of the prostate in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or strictly for sexual purposes.
