The prostate is a gland that is part of the male sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's primary function is to secrete and then store a clear liquid that is a vital component of semen. A normal human's prostate is a bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can block urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in extreme cases completely impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In elderly males, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with medications or with surgical measures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting elderly males and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised bloodwork PSA results might signal disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been found that drugs such as Docetaxel are useful in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for health-related or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
