The prostate is really a gland that is a vital part of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its main job is to produce and store a see-through fluid that is a component of semen (seminal fluid). A non-diseased man's prostate gland is slightly bigger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the course of the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can hinder the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in severe instances totally impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or even operations.

In older-aged men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of prescription medications or with even surgery that removes part of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers that affects older men and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated pSA blood results could indicate a disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has only recently been noticed that medicines like Docetaxel can be helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical value or for strictly sexual purposes.
