The prostate is a vital component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's principle job is to secrete and store a see-through fluid that is part of seminal fluid. A healthy individual's prostate is a little bit larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can jam up the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in very extreme instances wholly impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or operations.

In older men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is called bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers to strike older men and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a lab blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Elevated test results may suggest disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has only recently been observed that medications including Docetaxel could be useful in the treatment of cancer.
