The prostate gland is a component of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate gland's overriding role is to secrete and then store a clear liquid that is an important part of semen. A sound human prostate gland is somewhat bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can stop up urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe situations entirely impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In older-aged males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with medicines or with even operations that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers to affect elderly males and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also a blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results can highly suggest disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been noted that drugs like Docetaxel may be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical or primarily for sexual purposes.
