The prostate is a gland that is part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's most significant function is to produce and store a see-through fluid that is a component of seminal fluid or semen. It can be treated with medicines or with even operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a lab blood test that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Elevated test results might signify disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has only recently been noticed that medications such as Docetaxel may be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.
