The prostate is a component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its main job is to produce and then store a clear fluid that is part of seminal fluid or semen. A sound individual's prostate is a bit bigger in size than a walnut. Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. In older-aged males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with the use of medication or with surgical measures that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes elderly men and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results can indicate a disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been uncovered that medicines including Docetaxel are helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or for strictly sexual purposes.
