The prostate gland is an important part of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most important function is to secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is a component of seminal fluid (semen). A normal man's prostate gland is somewhat heftier in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can impede the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme instances entirely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In elderly males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medicines or with operations that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers to affect older-aged men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated pSA blood results may highly suggest disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has only recently been observed that drugs like Docetaxel are useful in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical or primarily for sexual purposes.
