The prostate gland is an important part of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its most paramount function is to produce and store a transparent liquid that is a component of seminal fluid (semen). A healthy man's prostate is slightly larger than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal examination.
Inflammation of the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can obstruct the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme situations entirely impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or surgical procedures.
In elderly males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with different types of medications or with even operations that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).
Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older males and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a laboratory blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Raised test results could suggest disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause your doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been discovered that medicines such as Docetaxel may be effective in treating a cancerous prostate.
Stimulation of the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical value or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
