The prostate gland is part of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's principle function is to first secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is a vital part of semen, or seminal fluid. A healthy human's prostate is slightly larger in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can occlude the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in very severe situations wholly impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In older men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is called bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with prescription medications or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised test results can be an indicator of disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has just recently been found that medicines such as Docetaxel are useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical value or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
