The prostate gland is a vital part of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's main role is to produce and then store a see-through fluid that is a vital component of semen (seminal fluid). A normal human prostate is somewhat greater in size than a walnut. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers to affect older-aged males and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also a blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which can be normally very low. Elevated test results can signal disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has only recently been observed that medications like Docetaxel are useful in treating a cancerous prostate.
