The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its most important role is to secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is part of seminal fluid or semen. A non-diseased human's prostate gland is slightly greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the course of the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can stop up urine flow, making urination difficult and painful and in very severe cases wholly impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In men who are older, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated blood PSA results could highly suggest disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been uncovered that drugs like Docetaxel can be helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or just for sexual fulfillment.
