The prostate is a vital part of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate gland's predominant job is to secrete and store a transparent liquid that is a component of semen. A healthy individual's prostate is a little bit bigger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can hinder the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme situations completely impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In older males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with surgical measures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to affect older males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Raised bloodwork PSA results can signify disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has just recently been discovered that medicines like Docetaxel are useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or primarily for sexual purposes.
