The prostate gland is an important part of the male sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its overriding job is to produce and store a transparent liquid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). A normal human prostate gland is somewhat larger than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can stop the urine stream, making urination difficult and very painful and in severe cases entirely impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.

In older-aged males, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of medications or with even surgery that removes part of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects older-aged males and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a laboratory blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised pSA blood results might signal disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has just recently been detected that medications including Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical value or for strictly sexual purposes.
