The prostate gland is part of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate's principle function is to first secrete and then store a clear fluid that is a component of semen (seminal fluid). A non-diseased individual's prostate gland is a bit larger in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can stop up the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in very severe situations totally impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or surgical procedures.

In elderly males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting elderly men and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally very low. Elevated pSA blood results can be an indicator of disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has recently been observed that medicines such as Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical value or just for sexual fulfillment.
