The prostate is a gland that is a component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's most primary role is to secrete and store a transparent fluid that is part of seminal fluid. A non-diseased man's prostate is a little bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam or evaluation.
Inflammation of the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can stop the flow of urine, making urination very painful and difficult and in very severe situations totally impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or even operations.
In older-aged men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is referred to as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers that affects older men and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a laboratory blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised blood PSA results could indicate a disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause your doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been observed that drugs including Docetaxel can be useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.
Stimulation of the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or strictly sexual purposes.
