The prostate is an important part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's chief function is to secrete and then store a clear liquid that is a vital part of semen, or seminal fluid. A normal human's prostate is slightly heftier in size than a walnut. There is also a laboratory blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results might signify disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has recently been noticed that medications like Docetaxel can be helpful in treating prostate cancer.
