The prostate is part of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's primary role is to first produce and then store a see-through fluid that is a component of seminal fluid or semen. A normal human's prostate is slightly larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can impede the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme situations completely impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or even operations.

In older men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with even surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to affect older-aged men and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised pSA blood results may indicate a disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has recently been noted that medications such as Docetaxel can be helpful in the treatment of cancer.
