The prostate is a vital component of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most paramount job is to first secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. A normal individual's prostate gland is somewhat bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can hinder the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme cases entirely impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or surgical procedures.

In men who are older, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating is difficult. This is known as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medication or with surgery that removes part of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers that strikes older men and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a lab blood test that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Raised blood PSA results could signal disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been found that drugs like Docetaxel can be useful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
