The prostate gland is a vital part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's principle job is to first secrete and then store a clear liquid that is an important part of semen, or seminal fluid. A healthy man's prostate gland is a bit bigger in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can occlude the urine stream, making urination difficult and very painful and in very severe situations completely impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In older males, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of medications or with even operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older men and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised pSA blood results may be an indicator of disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been noted that medicines such as Docetaxel are helpful in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or strictly for sexual purposes.
