The prostate gland is a component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's most primary function is to secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid or semen. A normal man's prostate gland is a little bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can impede the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in very severe instances completely impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or even surgery.

In older-aged males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers that strikes older-aged men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also also a blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results might highly suggest disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been observed that medicines including Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or just for sexual fulfillment.
