The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's predominant job is to secrete and store a clear fluid that is a vital part of seminal fluid or semen. A sound man's prostate gland is somewhat greater in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can stop up urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme situations wholly impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In older-aged men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating is difficult. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with medications or with surgical measures that removes part of the prostate. One common operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes elderly men and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could suggest disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been noticed that drugs like Docetaxel are effective in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or strictly for sexual purposes.
