The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. Its most paramount role is to secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. A non-diseased human's prostate is a bit larger than a walnut. Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. In men who are older, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting older males and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a laboratory blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Raised test results may indicate a disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has only recently been detected that medications like Docetaxel could be useful in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
