The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's most significant role is to first produce and then store a clear fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid (semen). Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older-aged men and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is normally very low. Elevated blood PSA results may signify disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause your physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been noted that drugs such as Docetaxel are effective in treating a cancerous prostate.
