The prostate gland is part of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's most significant role is to produce and store a see-through fluid that is an important part of semen, or seminal fluid. A non-diseased human prostate is somewhat greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is located in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can jam up urine flow, making urination difficult and painful and in very extreme instances completely impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or even surgery.

In older men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with prescription medications or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes elderly males and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results could signal disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been observed that medicines such as Docetaxel may be effective in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical value or strictly sexual fulfillment.
