The prostate is a vital component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's chief job is to produce and then store a transparent fluid that is part of seminal fluid (semen). A normal human's prostate is slightly bigger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can hinder the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in extreme situations wholly impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.

In older males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with even surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting older-aged males and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated blood PSA results may suggest disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has recently been discovered that medications including Docetaxel can be useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical or primarily for sexual purposes.
