The prostate gland is an important part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's leading function is to secrete and store a clear liquid that is a vital part of seminal fluid or semen. A sound human's prostate gland is a bit larger in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the course of the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can jam up the flow of urine, making urination very painful and difficult and in extreme situations completely impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In men who are older, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with even surgery that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects older-aged males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also also a lab blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated test results can indicate a disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has only recently been noted that medicines like Docetaxel are effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or for strictly sexual purposes.
