The prostate is really a gland that is a vital part of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. Its primary job is to secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is a component of semen. A non-diseased man's prostate is somewhat larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can hinder the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in very extreme instances wholly impassable. In older-aged men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is commonly known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medications or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers that strikes elderly men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Raised blood PSA results may be an indicator of disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been noticed that medications including Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
