The prostate is a gland that is part of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's paramount function is to secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is a vital component of seminal fluid. A normal human prostate is slightly larger than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can stop urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe instances entirely impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In older-aged males, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with medication or with surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike older males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a laboratory blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results could signify disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause your doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been found that drugs such as Docetaxel could be effective in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
