The prostate is part of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's most primary role is to produce and store a see-through fluid that is a component of seminal fluid (semen). A non-diseased human prostate gland is slightly greater in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can occlude urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in very severe cases totally impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or even operations.

In older males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is commonly known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with prescription medications or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike elderly men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There can be also a laboratory blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated blood PSA results may indicate a disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has recently been found that medications like Docetaxel are effective in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or just for sexual purposes.
