This page is about prostrate scar tissue

The prostate is a gland that is part of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's primary role is to first produce and then store a clear liquid that is part of semen, or seminal fluid. A sound individual's prostate is slightly greater in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can hinder urine flow, making urination difficult and painful and in very severe cases wholly impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.

In men who are older, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with even surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes older males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also a blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results can highly suggest disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has recently been found that drugs like Docetaxel may be effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or just for sexual purposes.
