The prostate gland is an important part of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its most primary function is to first secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is part of semen, or seminal fluid. A non-diseased man's prostate is a little bit greater in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam or evaluation.
Inflammation of the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can occlude the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme situations completely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or operations.
In older men, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is called bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with operations that removes part of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).
Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to strike older males and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results may highly suggest disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been noticed that medicines like Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in treating cancer.
Stimulating the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or for strictly sexual purposes.
