The prostate is really a gland that is a vital part of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its predominant role is to first produce and then store a see-through liquid that is a component of semen. A non-diseased individual's prostate gland is somewhat larger than a shelled walnut. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike elderly men and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is also normally very low. Raised pSA blood results could signal disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has just recently been discovered that medications like Docetaxel can be effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.
