The prostate is part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's chief function is to secrete and then store a clear fluid that is an important part of semen (seminal fluid). A sound human's prostate is a bit bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can stop the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme instances wholly impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In older-aged males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is referred to as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medications or with even surgery that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers to affect older males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Elevated pSA blood results may highly suggest disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has only recently been noticed that drugs such as Docetaxel could be helpful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for medical value or strictly sexual fulfillment.
