The prostate gland is a vital component of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's most significant job is to produce and then store a transparent liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid (semen). A normal man's prostate gland is a little bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is located in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can jam up urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe situations completely impossible. In older-aged men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with surgical measures that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting older-aged men and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results can suggest disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has recently been detected that medicines like Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or for strictly sexual purposes.
