The prostate is a vital part of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's principle job is to produce and store a transparent fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid. A normal man's prostate gland is slightly bigger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can occlude the urine stream, making urination difficult and very painful and in extreme cases entirely impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, prostate massage or surgery.

In older-aged men, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers affecting elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally very low. Raised pSA blood results can highly suggest disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been uncovered that medications such as Docetaxel may be helpful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for medical value or just for sexual purposes.
