The prostate is really a gland that is part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's chief role is to produce and then store a see-through liquid that is part of seminal fluid (semen). A sound man's prostate gland is somewhat heftier in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the course of the rectal examination.
Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can block urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in extreme cases totally impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or surgical procedures.
In older-aged males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of medication or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).
Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older-aged males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could suggest disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has recently been observed that medications like Docetaxel could be helpful in treating cancer.
Stimulating the prostate in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or strictly sexual fulfillment.
