The prostate is really a gland that is part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could suggest disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has recently been observed that medications like Docetaxel could be helpful in treating cancer.
