The prostate is a vital part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most significant job is to produce and store a see-through fluid that is part of seminal fluid or semen. A healthy human prostate gland is a bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can stop urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe instances entirely impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical measures.

In elderly males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination is difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with medications or with surgical measures that removes part of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting older-aged men and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a lab blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Elevated test results might highly suggest disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been detected that drugs such as Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for medical value or strictly sexual fulfillment.
