The prostate is a gland that is an important part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its main function is to first produce and then store a clear liquid that is part of semen. A sound human's prostate is slightly bigger than a walnut. There can be also a lab blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised blood PSA results can signal disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has only recently been observed that drugs including Docetaxel are useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.
