The prostate is a component of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its primary job is to secrete and then store a clear fluid that is a component of seminal fluid. A non-diseased individual's prostate gland is a bit larger in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can impede the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe instances totally impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In men who are older, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination is difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes older males and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Raised blood PSA results may suggest disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has only recently been noticed that drugs including Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in the treatment of cancer.
