The prostate is really a gland that is part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's predominant role is to first secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is an important part of semen (seminal fluid). A normal man's prostate is somewhat heftier in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can occlude the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in very extreme cases completely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In older males, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers to affect older-aged men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also a blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally very low. Raised test results could signify disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has just recently been detected that medications including Docetaxel may be useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical or strictly for sexual purposes.
