The prostate gland is a vital component of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's most significant job is to first secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid. Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers to strike older men and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Elevated blood PSA results can signify disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has recently been noted that medications such as Docetaxel can be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.
