The prostate is a gland that is an important part of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's leading role is to secrete and store a transparent liquid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). A sound human prostate gland is a little bit larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can jam up the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in very severe cases completely impossible. In men who are older, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is commonly known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers to affect elderly males and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There can be also a blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated pSA blood results could indicate a disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been detected that drugs including Docetaxel may be helpful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
