The prostate gland is a component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's paramount job is to first secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid or semen. A sound human prostate gland is slightly larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can stop urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in severe instances totally impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or operations.

In older-aged men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with operations that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also also a laboratory blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised test results can indicate a disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has recently been noticed that medications including Docetaxel can be useful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly sexual purposes.
